Being popular may have its perks, but according to researchers, it also has at least one drawback—popular people tend to get the flu about two weeks earlier than others generally do. The researchers believe that identifying people who are at the center of social networks and monitoring their health could help in the early detection of flu epidemics, especially in self-contained environments like college campuses or military bases.
